Fixing a cracked gourd before you use this paper texture  tehnique

First, drill a tiny hole at the bottom of the crack and then fill it with wood putty or if you plan to dye it, use spackle to fill the hole then sand when dry. In this project, where it will be covered with paper, just fill it with putty and let it dry, with no sanding.

Then you pick a pallet of 3 to 5 acrylic paint colors making the darkest color the base color. Cover the entire paper with the base color and let dry.

paper technique using sponge

Using a sea sponge, gently dab on each layer of paint. Then let the paper dry.

When dry, the paper is torn into strips and then crushed into tight balls to create wrinkles.

Next, tear the  wrinkled strips into small pieces. Cover the back with Modge Podge and lay it on a gourd section covered with a layer of Modge Podge.
