Stop Hugging Your Gourd!

Here are some tips for holding both large and small gourd tight enough to steadily wood burn.

holding gourd

I am not into hugging my gourds, but sometimes to hold them steady for woodburning there is no other way. I’ve burned my fingers, burned holes in my shirts, and just felt out of control with my gourd when woodburning. So I have searched for other solutions. From a rubber mat and placemats to a bathroom towel to a small tray.

Several years ago, during a class I was giving, a student pulled out a big plastic red circle. Bought on Amazon it was called a Silicone Bowl Stabilizer. This thing was the “hit of the day”! It did hold her gourd steadily on the table and kept it stable on the table as people got up to move around. Great tool but a little expensive at about $30.

My problem was not the concept, but the size. I usually don’t work on big gourds. I work with the smaller ones. They sell better and they are much easier to transport and store for classes and shows. So this bowl was not going to work for me. Instead, I found something smaller that does the job This smaller plastic ring works well for me. It is lightweight and fits nicely in a short drawer and the tote bag when I travel to meetings or gourd classes.  Plus the price is much better. You can buy one in my store for $10.
