Inspirational Challenge: Cat Gourd

Need inspiration for a new gourd project?

Why not try creating a cat from a gourd? It can be small or large. So how do you get started? Let me inspire you!

When I start a project like this I go to Pinterest and look for examples. Sometimes the image may be a gourd and sometimes not. I look for body part ideas and for ideas on how to do the face. What could a cat gourd look like?I have provided some images below .

Make a Cat Gourd Birdhouse

There are several different types of gourds that make great birdhouses! For most small birds, a kettle gourd from 6-8” in diameter works best. Dipper gourds and bottle gourds also make great birdhouses. For these, just use the same diameter measurements as the kettle gourds. Attach it to a post or tree with plenty of space between houses. Position the house with the opening away from prevailing winds.

Drilling the hole

Drill an entrance hole high enough from the bottom so a bird can step down into the house. Smooth the edges. Remove seeds and pulp. Drill small holes in the base for drainage. Drill a hole through the top of the gourd to hang the birdhouse, and a quarter-sized hole at the top on the back side to provide air circulation. The entrance hole must be big enough for the bird. The following are just a few diameters for specific birds: Bluebird, 11⁄4″; Flicker, 21⁄2″; House Wren, 1″; Chickadee, 11⁄4″; Purple Martin, 21⁄2″.
