Gilders Paste Wax in Gourd Art

Gilder’s paste wax on Gourds

What do I  use this paste wax product for?

Some paint with it on the gourd surface, but it is a life saver when you need a metal trinket or bead to match your color scheme. Knowing how to use Gilder’s paste wax on gourds can save you money! This is a review of products and methods.

metal charms

Metal charms, old metal earrings, tiny plastic animals, metal cut butterflies, and dragonflies and metal crosses and keys, and even textured metal beads!  You often find them at thrift stores, craft stores, and online. I recently bought 30 online for $10. They aren’t very attractive, and I bet you have passed them by often when you see them in a discount basket.

Actually, you are walking by something you can turn into an element that will compliment your gourd and give it an embellishment that might attract a buyer. All you need is this product, your finger, and a brush. Let’s take a look at ways you can usr Gilder’s paste wax on gourds.

A paste wax is used to hilight and slightly color a material

You can turn a trinket made of metal, plastic, polymer clay, and quick wood into a beautiful piece that matches your gourd using gilding wax or sometimes referred to as colored metallic paste wax. Gliders wax is not a paint, but rather a wax-based medium used to highlight and color a variety of substrates and materials, both inside and outside while providing that great, wax-finished look.

You apply them with a brush, a sponge, or even your finger to create your finish or texture. The wax produces a matte to semi-gloss finish on its own, but by burnishing with a soft cloth, you can produce a deep, rich luster.

Take look at this short video to see how it is applied. Tip:  If the metal is smooth and shiny without any cutouts you may need to add a spray to give it tooth.

Gilder’s paste wax on Gourds colors

The Gilders brand comes in 28 colors both standard and metallic colors. By adding traditional paint thinner, you can transform GILDERS® paste wax into a cream, paint, stain, or wash—all with one product. Additionaly, you have total control of how opaque, translucent, textured, or washed this wax-based medium can be!

Here are two videos. One applying it with your finger and the other thinning it down and using a paintbrush. There are two more produces used here a topcoat when finished and a thinning agent. I have used both products and they are good choices to have in your workroom.

How is it used as a paint on gourds?

Occasionally, I have seen it used directly on the gourd surface using the paintbrush method.

You will need to lightly sand the gourd shell with fine dry/wet sandpaper or fine steel wool. If the surface is too smooth or dirty, the paste wax will not attach to the gourd, and flaking will occur over time. In addition, for mistakes, remove them with a cloth within 10 minutes of application. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove.

Latana Bernier says, The African Bronze is an outstanding color. You will not find any green in any medium that has more life and natural luster than this!

GILDERS® Verdigris, but then touched it up with African Bronze to retain that wonderful look.

“I use this paste wax directly from the tin and I use short bristle brushes. If your paste is too thick to spread easily, dip the brush TIP only in brush cleaner. Excessive blending will cause mud so just put it on and blend gently. After the head has been based with White, I use the #6 brush and sideload. Use the brush on the side and make short choppy strokes for feathers.”

The Gilders paste wax brand is top of the line and at $10 to $20 an ounce, I have no plans to buy all 28.  Although, they they will last  me forever and can be re-freshened. A small tin (30 ml by volume) will cover approximately 30 square feet.

For this reason, shop around for these. I did find them at Fire Mountain Gems, for $10.  Dick Blick  has them for $12.50. Another tip I have is to cover each with a circle of Press and Seal to keep the wax moist.

Consider these other products

But there are other brands out there that are applied in the same way! The quality is less because they are using different beeswax formulas but they all work the same way.

Also look at the Finnabair Art Alchemy Metallique Wax Brand, Several colors here both standard and metallic. Also comes in a mat finish and an opal finish in serval colors. Around $6, Amazon.

Gilder’s paste wax on Gourds Prima brand

I found the Prima brand on Amazon for around $8.

Gilder’s paste wax on Gourds paste from Maria

Maria Delos (https://www.mariasartcreations.com/) carries these cheap ones. Each kit has different colors and is thinned with paint thinner. Acid-Free and Non-Toxic. $6.

Best Deal out there – Make your own!

I have found that most craft products are not a combination of  unknown elements. There are some of us that like a challenge. Look at this video by a crafter who has found that two simple products can be turned into a wax paste that works just fine! She uses cheap oil pastel sticks and coconut oil. Consider the fun and savings.

Now it is your turn. Have you used these? Which do you like?
