  • Tacky glue
  • Small paintbrush
  • Black tempera paint
  • chestnut ink

Egg Prep

Try to keep the pieces large. Do your best to get the membranes from the underside of the shell. If you clean these while they are a little wet, that will help. Then let them set to dry before putting them in a container.

Maria Dellos, a member of this group and a store owner, has a great video which I will share at the end of the post. She demonstrates using a shard which is a great idea. It won’t overwhelm you.  The glue can get messy so keep those baby wipe handy! Here is an quick overview of the steps.

Prep the Gourd Surface Area

Make sure to wood burn a deep line around the area you want to apply the shells. This will help when you cut the shell from the edges. Apply tape along the edge so you don’t get glue on it. Now you are ready for the eggshells.

Gather Supplies and Begin Process

With a brush, add glue to a small area. More glue is better than less. It drys clear.

The Process Steps

With your finger, press and break the eggshell piece into the glue. Work with the membrane side down (against gourd). Use a baby wipe for any cleanup. Let it dry for about a minute or use a heat gun.

Use an Exacto knife to trim the shells from your wood-burned edge.

Clear off the shells that did not stick. Apply more glue and use tweezers to re-apply the pieces and add tiny pieces to fill the empty areas. When you like the results, let it dry or use your dryer.

Now use an  Emory board to sand any rough  shell edges on the gourd  edge and over the surface of the shells.

.

To achieve a grout look, you can use acrylic black paint to cover the eggshell, then wipe the shell surface of excess paint.

Now you can add a little color.  Maria suggests chestnut brown chestnut Gourd Dye. Any paint, ink or dye will work.  To get an extra shine she adds a metallic ink at the end, Then she varnishes the final product.

Here are some examples to inspire you!

Now take a look at Maria’s video videos of the process.

These short directions are available in the store as a downloadable file.
