Let’s explore International Santas

There is something wonderful when an excellent painter sits a gourd in front of them and lets the creative juices flow. To help you get into the Christmas spirit I thought I would introduce you to a gourd artist from Wasola Mo. Suzy Meelhuysen has her work on sale at her Etsy store, Suzys Santas, etc.

What makes them different?

Suzy unique style includes creating Santas with an international flair. This gives them a special character that makes them appealing to someone with a personal interest in that culture. This approach is working because she has had over 600 sales!

In her following description, notice how she strays from the conventional and uses colors and details that are unexpected. She seems to associate with each Santa as a character she has met and her craftsmanship brings each Santa alive to the viewer.

We all strive to create a piece of gourd art that immediately speaks to the viewer!

“ Santas are done with non-traditional colors, or, to be more accurate, non-commercial. I love using subtle colors and subdued tones, with occasional jewel tones or the rare pastel shades. It takes me from 10 to 40 hours to complete a single gourd, and that does not include prep time or research.”

Santa collectors will find a treasure trove of the unusual, with varied themes or just a jumble of presents, and Santas are adorned with everything from bells, stars, and carved staffs to whimsical, crooked trees. Many of the Santas smoke magical fairie pipes that leave glittering magic” in the air. “

“I use craft acrylic paints on clean, dry gourds, sprayed with a matte finishing spray. Some are decorated with various glitters, mostly from the magic pipes smoked by Santa. Gourds are intact, so their seeds are confined to the inside of the gourd. Some gourds are stabilized using a “foot” made with wood filler so they are not so easy to tip over. I may add a base using a bit of sheetrock on the most unstable ones.
