I grew up in a family that strongly supported the military and my mother always decorated the house on the 4th of July. When I was a teenager, she took a ceramic class where she painted greenware. It was that year she created decorations for every holiday. For years after that, something was set on the dining room table to commemorate every important date. Many of those pieces I still have as heirlooms.
When i started making gourds, that was the first thought I had when someone mention creating a patriotic gourd. Many gourders began to tell me about their first patriotic gourd, so I gave it more thought.
But like all of us, I didn’t do it. It was in the back of my mind until I was at a festival in Texas and had a booth next to a gourd artist who had nothing but patriot gourd! To my surprise, he nearly sold out!
A Patriotic gourd can have strong meanings.
These themed gourds can help us remember the service of our family members or our own service. I am reminded that all the symbols and icons we consider to include are there to remind us that our freedom is not free. The use of Red white and blue colors is always there. Also, you can use, eagles, the flag, stars, and Uncle Sam are great ideas to consider. My dear gourd buddy, Karen Friend, did this example and focused on making the eagle beak stand out by applying a layer of apoxie sculpt. I think it makes the bird stunning.
She shares this creative process with me and another gourd artist friend. She suggested it needed something else. Together we suggest several things till we came up with the idea of adding wood-burned feathers with eagles on them. And that’s how it ended up. Three heads were better than one.
An when it went on the booth stand, it sold immediately!
Patriotic gourds come in all sizes and shapes
If you are looking for a gourd project to sell, then consider this topic.
The American Fourth of July Gourd seems to have these requirements
- The color pallet of red, white, and blue
- Red and white stripes
- Stars, flag, eagles, and Uncle Sam
The brighter the better and the size doesn’t matter. I’ve gathered some examples together to inspire you to create a patriotic gourd to celebrate the 4th. Many of these images were found on the Internet with no names. I you recognize any let me know.
What would your patriotic gourd look like? You can see more of Karen’s work here.
Please, share your thoughts here in the comment box or share them with all the gourd artists on our Facebook Group Page.
