Sandlady’s Gourd Farm was started by Helen Thomas with 2 packs of good seeds. Now she is one of many gourd growers selling to gourd artists. What will you find there?
That is how it all got started for Helen Thomas. Like many of us, once she held a gourd in her hand and realized what wonderful things an artist like herself could do with this gem she was started on her gourd journey!
She just couldn’t stop. Each year the love and admiration she has for the power of gourds have just grown. After 30 years her domain is a fun place to visit.
Sandlady’s Gourd Farm
As gourd artists, we sometimes forget all the work it takes to create the product we love to collect.
Many of our gourd farmers are full of information and have a real talent for helping you find the right gourd. Helen’s motto says it all;
“You tell me what you do with gourds and I will find the unique gourds you need for your projects. I hope to give you an education in growing gourds and crafting gourds. Flat bottoms and sandy blond color when cleaned. I clean them all.”
Need a beautiful African Kettle gourd? She has as many as 9 wagons full.
She has dirty ones by 1000s and many more cleaned.
Sandlady ‘s Gourd Farm is in Tangier, Indiana which is in Park County. Her farm is a very welcoming place.
She even has a Gourd Museum with hundreds of pieces to view showing various types of art on gourds, such as painting, carving, sculpture, wood-burning, musical, chip carving, weaving, and more. She will even show you how she uses a one-row seed planter and an old plant setter, a gourd washer tub using a power washer,
Sandlady has grown gourds since the late ’80s. Helen has given hundreds of presentations for various groups such as the State Master Gardeners of Illinois, Danville, Il. IVY Tech, Purdue’s Breaking New Ground program, and many more. She ends each one with a Gourd Band!
She is a member of the Indiana Gourd Society and won a few blue ribbons in the competition with a focus on dried gourds she grew and artwork on gourds. The farm has even hosted their gourd festival.
One of longest gourds she has grown won a blue ribbon at six feet tall, Helen enjoys wood burning and painting on gourds. She has three children, 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren whom she teaches art on gourds. She has taught them to spin the spinner gourds. Some can get 3 to 5 gourds spinning at a time.
