Social Platforms for Gourd Artist
Facebook is the best place for one of our favorite parts of a patch meeting, “Show and Tell”
Gourd art is not like quilting. We are not well organized and there are not billion-dollar companies feeding us product. Nor can we enter a store and sign up for classes.
We are growing and festivals are increasing and providing more interaction time for us to learn and share. But many of us are not living in major cities with social organizations to join. So how do you keep up on what other gourd artists in our gourd community are doing and can see their work and ask questions? We use a social media for platform for gourd art. One of the best places is on Facebook Groups.
If you don’t have any account, it is an easy process to open one. Go to the site ad follow the steps.
To keep yourself safe do not “friend” anyone you don’t know. Choose only gourd people. Keep this space limited to gourds. Every time a “friend” posts a picture and text on their account you will see it on your screen which is called the “newsfeed.”
Facebook Groups are the post popular social media platforms for gourd art
To find other gourd artists you will need to join some groups. Click the Facebook groups section search “gourd art”. Read the group description to see who they are. It may be run by a store like Welburn in California or it could be a group that represents a patch or a state gourd society. In addition, there are groups where you can post a gourd with a price and sell it by e-mail and telephone.
Incidentally, check the numbers of followers at the top of the page. The higher the number, the better chance of getting to share with international artists.
When you are ready to join, click on the Join button. The group administrator looks at your request to determine you are a real person and sends you an email on approval.
When you return later upon approval, there will be a space on the top of the page for you to write in. Before hitting enter, you can add a photo by clicking on the photo icon to upload a picture.
Responding to Facebook posts
When someone posts to the group site it will come up in your newsfeed with the person’s name and the group name. If you click on the person’s name you will go to their Facebook page. Click on the group name and go there.
You can respond from your feed or go to the group page and answer there. Click on the comment icon.

Second best socia] media platform for gourd art is Pinterest
Have you ever gone to Google and searched for “gourd”? It is overwhelming! Even if you select just images you get pictures that are not what you are looking for. I have several folders of gourds I like and use for inspiration.
I also have collections of great gourd pictures that relate to all the categories I will be discussing. Would you like to go through them and save some of them to your computer? That is how you are going to use Pinterest.
Visit my Pinterest Board
When you go to my Pinterest site, you will find several boards. These are like the folders in my picture file cabinet! You can create as many boards as you want (some have hundreds!) on any subject once you set up your own space. Each board can be private or open to the public. Only you can see the private boards. So, you might want to collect recipes and not share them.
The public boards mean that others can see your pictures and add them to their boards. They find your board by its title when they search the site. Type “Inspiration gourds” into the Pinterest search box and see how many boards you find with great examples!
Finding relevant pictures this way is much easier than Google. This is how I find all my gourd pictures. You will also find pins that include a web address and offer you information, not an image.
Watch this video on creating boards. Do not worry about using right key words.
The board name should just have the word gourd in it and we will find it. These will not be private nor collaborate
Hold your finger down on the image until the pin appears and press it.
When you click on the pin on this website a red icon will appear. Try it on this image of our post pin.
This process works when you find any image anywhere on Pinterest.
Next, a list of your boards will appear. Choose Gourd Art Talk and off it goes.
“Please create a board for “Gourd Art Talk”once you are on Pinterest.
The Gourd Art Talk Board Purpose
- This board will have your favorite pins and images you want to save from my site, so you can quickly find the post or image again.
- If every reader of our blog has a page like this then we have more opportunities to reach many more gourd artists looking for information and therefore we drive viewers to our blog.
- I use this board on my site to store any images or information I might want to write about. And I put all the post pins here. So you can also come here to re-pin.
- Another way to use the pin is to save it to your desktop. Later, email the pin to a friend not on Pinterest so she can find the website.
How do the boards help me as a gourd artist?
Inspiration and creative ideas
Have you seen a finished gourd and liked how it was cut? Or a gourd that had a great color scheme. Or an embellishment technique you liked and want to learn?
These images, when you find them, get pinned to your “Inspiration Gourds board”. What gourd techniques do want to master. Start a board for each and gather pictures of the good ones.
( Use the word, gourd in every title)
Put the word, gourds into the search section of Pinterest and start pinning gourds into the folder.
P.S. You are welcome to re-pin from my boards! Click on the icon image on the footer.
Social media platforms for gourd art can help you understand what quality looks like!
Most artists keep picture files to help them get to know what they like. This will also help you determine the excellence of a technique you are learning and how you and other artists are measuring up.
This is how you will discover the “master artists” in this area. The other thing you can do is create a board of your work. You then send your friends there to see all your work instead of having your own web site.
One note of concern here: If your name is not on the front of the image you will never get credit for it.
If someone has a gourd on Pinterest that I use to demonstrate a point I am making, I can’t credit them for the gourd. Many of us didn’t think about that when we started posting our gourds. Some images have been there 10 to 12 years!
If this is a “how do I do that” tutorial topic for you let me know in the comments.
If you are already on Pinterest, how are you using your boards?
Share your thoughts here in the comment box or share them with all the gourd artists on our Facebook Group Page.
